Last night, the fashion industry descended on the Royal Albert Hall for the Fashion Awards, an annual event which celebrates the best of the British and international fashion scenes, and this year honoured the likes of Tom Ford, Simone Rocha and Jonathan Anderson. It was a starry night on the red carpet – and there was plenty of amazing fashion to enjoy. This included from Eve, who chose a deconstructed suit from Roksanda, which she says made her feel powerful and feminine.
“Eve possesses a distinctive and powerful personal style and we wanted to choose an outfit that not only reflects her unique personality but complements her strength,” designer Roksanda Ilincic tells us. “The suit Eve is wearing is part of the opening look from my latest collection. Modern in silhouette with a modular structure we felt it perfectly aligned with Eve’s dynamic energy.”
Before she headed off onto the red carpet, we caught up with the musician to chat all things fashion, her evolving style and why she can’t get enough of a great suit.
“I am wearing Roksanda – when we did the fitting, I tried on so many amazing pieces, all of her stuff is just incredible. One thing I kept being drawn to though was the suiting, and so tonight I am wearing what is essentially a deconstructed suit. It is a beautiful tuxedo-inspired look, but also it is in no way a tuxedo. It’s a cropped jacket with these amazing panels that are really long in the front and these beautiful high-waisted trousers with a leather belt that goes all the way around one panel. It’s very cool and I’m excited to wear it. I love suits – and I think that people tend to associate Roksanda with beautiful flowing dresses, so I think it’s nice to wear something different.”
“What I love about her designs is that yes it’s clothing, but it’s also art. I think she is very thoughtful – a lot of colour and construction, and it always makes me feel very womanly and powerful. Her clothes are just so beautiful and unique.”
“It usually happens pretty organically, I often just come across them. With Roksanda, I was introduced to her by a very close mutual friend, and we actually both support the same charity. I’ve got to know her and she is just this really warm, really cool person – so it makes it all the more special when you get to wear someone’s designs who you also know to be an amazing person.”
“I am very involved in the decisions, but when it comes to finer details of jewellery of things like that, I pass that over to my stylist because she just sees things in a different way – she is called Olivia Buckingham, I’ve been working with her for a long time and she can just do those finer things that my brain just doesn’t. So I am more bigger picture stuff – and she’s all about the detail. But I would still say I am very involved – for each event, it’s different, I know how I want to feel and so I need to be involved from the very beginning.”
“Well, I am obsessed with suits. I always have been – I think that throughout my career, it’s the one thing that has been my constant. I just love the way that I feel in a suit – it can be done in so many different ways, whether you want to go a bit edgy or crazy, but that’s probably my go to.”
“Oh, it has evolved! I started in the public eye in the 2000s where it was more is more is more – we wore everything. Throughout my career, I’ve then gone to more fashion things, and as you get older, you also refine. I think that moving to London changed me too – I think my style is different, it’s a little more subtle. Even though some people might not think that because I have pistachio hair or something, but I would still say it is more refined and womanly than it was, and also, now that I have a child, that defines certain things that I wear too. So it’s definitely changed.”
“Ooh that is tricky. I mean years ago I was so privileged to attend the CFDA Awards in New York with Alexander McQueen. It was the most amazing thing, to meet him and be able to hang out with him. I think he was just incredible. So that’s probably my most memorable fashion moment.”
“Bianca Jagger – she is just classic, classic, classic. I like things that are effortless. I’d also say Zendaya. Law Roach and her are just killing it every freaking time – I have never seen her look bad and that is probably the closet I would want to raid if I could.”
“I like to have lots of people around – the hair and make-up and the styling team will be milling about, and we always have music on, and it’s fun – you need to get ready for the buzz of heading out onto the red carpet. It is daunting so you need to have the right energy. Tonight, I am lucky because I get to walk with Roksanda, so we’ll be a little team.”
“There are so many people that look at fashion as being frivolous but I honestly believe that it’s such an important part of self-expression. It’s a way to signal to the world who we are, it’s our uniform. Yes, fashion can seem silly but it’s important – and I think it’s so much fun!”
