One of the key names in bespoke tailoring on London’s Savile Row is set to expand in New York. Cad & The Dandy will unveil a 1,500 sq ft ready-to-wear store at 130 West 57th Street — a thoroughfare known as ‘Billionaire’s Row’.
Opening next month, the store will present the label’s handmade RTW Savile Row designs in a space below its one-of-a-kind Bespoke Penthouse that opened in 2018.
The company said the brand’s New York presence “will be a one-stop shop for men to build an exquisitely tailored, exceptionally wearable wardrobe”.
The arrival of RTW does help it present a more complete offer, but this is RTW with a Savile Row spin so we’re not exactly talking about offshore mass manufacturing.
“Every ready-to-wear garment from Cad & The Dandy is made by hand, something we take enormous pride in,” said Creative Director Oliver Mumby. “When launching our ready-to-wear collection in 2021, we only knew one thing, bespoke, and that’s how we have approached our latest collection. Each garment is made the old-fashioned way: hand padded lapels, hand sewn collar, working buttonholes and fully canvassed, all made by hand. Something almost unique to any brand in the world.”
And US MD Steve Knorsch added: “The ready-to-wear store will be an excellent complement to our full bespoke experience. For the client that needs something on a shorter timeline, it’s a viable alternative. As well as offering a huge array of visual inspiration with the ever-changing seasonal designs on show. Current bespoke customers will now have the ability to augment their wardrobes with ready-to-wear items such as knitwear, suedes, etc, from the source and not compromise on the quality they are used to.”
Very few Savile Row bespoke brands are available in the US and the company said only one other offers RTW so clearly it will have a strong story to tell American shoppers seeking a modern interpretation of classic English style.
Co-owner James Sleater said: “The opportunity to expand into New York with our second premises in the city is an exciting step for the brand and I hope this becomes one of many new shops in our planned company expansion.”
And fellow co-owner Ian Meiers added: “Our garments epitomise traditional English tailoring with more structure, shape and attention to detail. This collection is a testament to our commitment to preserving our tailoring heritage while offering a sophisticated and contemporary choice.”
