A Master’s student from Salford University is looking to reach £700 to enter the competition.
A Salford student is raising money to represent the UK in the College Disc Golf Competition.
Joshua Catchatoor, a Master’s student at Salford University, has been selected to take part in the championship in South Carolina.
Currently studying drama production for film, TV, and digital media, Joshua began his disc golf career as a hobby with his Latvian friend.
The sport is well established in America, but has begun to rise in popularity in the UK.
Said to be invented in the 60s, it follows the basic rules of golf, replacing the balls with discs that are thrown into metal baskets.
Sometimes known as frisbee golf, the sport is played on a course with nine or 18 holes, that are designed to include obstructed fairways and difficult shots. Players are required to throw discs from at least one hundred metres or further.
Due to the technical skill required, disc golf can be a challenging spot.
Joshua told Salford Now: “From my very first trip to Longford Park Disc Golf Course, in Stretford, Manchester, myself and several accompanying friends were completely hooked.”
The College Disc Golf Competition will be held at Winthrop University, South Carolina. The USA National Championship is held on the same grounds.
In order to get there, Joshua is raising money by running a 10km around Longford Park Disc Golf Course whilst playing the full course. He is calling his fundraiser “The 10k Throw”.
He has set up a GoFundMe page to reach the £700 needed to get him to the competition, stating: “The vast majority of this comes out of our own pocket, so as I’m a student it’s a bit difficult to raise the funds myself, so any donations, however small would be massively appreciated”.
Joshua will be representing both the UK and Salford at the event, and in comments given to Salford Now, he explained: “I never really thought that was on the cards for me, this is a really, really good feeling.
“It’s a bit momentous, but I’m going to really enjoy myself out there as well and do my country proud and represent the UK as best I can.
“I haven’t been playing for as long as some of the Americans, because obviously it’s much more popular over there it’s much more widely known, Disc Golf came from America and it’s still a growing sport over here.”
