He will be competing against 2022 champion James, 15, who recently set a new UK record for speedcubing, with an average cube-solving time of under six seconds.
The championship, held for a third successive year in Coventry, runs until Sunday.
Categories include the standard Rubik’s Cube, as well as other sizes from 2×2, up to 7×7.
There are also “twisty puzzles” challenges, such as the Pyraminx, Megaminx, Clock, Skewb, and Square-1.
All the winners will be officially recognised by the World Cube Association, the global governing body, and there are representatives from 32 countries.
However, only competitors representing the UK will be able to win the champion title at the Coventry gathering.
It comes after the European championship was held in Spain, external, in July.
