Prince William has been granted a new position as Patron of the Football Association (FA), following his dedicated support of the England men’s team Euro 2024 campaign in Germany.
The Prince of Wales attended as many of his beloved squad’s games in person as possible and was there in Berlin for their 2-1 defeat in the final against Spain.
The FA is responsible for promoting every level of football in the country, from grassroots groups to the major tournaments and teams representing England on the world stage.
The organisation oversees England international teams across men’s, women’s, youth and disability football, as well as running the National League System and FA Competitions including the Emirates FA Cup and Adobe Women’s FA Cup.
It also helps to take care of Wembley Stadium and St George’s Park, the training ground for the England team where William met them before the Euros.
As well as his football promotion, the Prince of Wales will become Patron of the Welsh Guards Charity, the Royal Cornwall Agricultural Association and President of the Victoria Cross and George Cross Association.
He will also be moving from President to Patron of Fields in Trust, a charity in the UK which aims to protect parks and green spaces for good.
William’s new patronages reflect his interests and passions, such as the environment and conservation, the military, the emergency services community and of course sport.
The Prince posted on X after the news broke: “Gareth, I want to thank you – not as the President of the @FA, but as an @England fan.
“Thank you for creating a team that stands shoulder to shoulder with the world’s finest in 2024. Thank you for showing humility, compassion, and true leadership under the most intense pressure and scrutiny.
“And thank you for being an all-round class act. You should be incredibly proud of what you’ve achieved. W.”
Mr Southgate is a former England player himself and has managed the team since 2016, taking them to the 2018 World Cup semi-finals, the 2022 World Cup quarter-finals and most notably the finals of both Euro 2020 and Euro 2024.
