As the clocks go back and Halloween comes and goes, the season of bonfire nights begins.
Bonfire Night or Guy Fawkes Night makes an annual and special appearance every 5th of November.
The evening includes lighting bonfires and setting off fireworks which are celebrated across the nation.
The reason this day is celebrated goes back to history as it’s the anniversary of a once failed attempt to blow up the Houses of Parliament.
For those who love a good Bonfire Night, Lewes is your perfect place for the biggest celebrated event for all things fire and fireworks.
Lewes is home to the most celebrated and largest of the festivities in the Sussex bonfire tradition and is famed for its celebrations which combine both new and old traditions.
Found in East Sussex, the region honours the old traditions of Guy Fawkes with its torch-lit processions and burning effigies alongside its 17 burning crosses which are paraded through the town for all residents to enjoy.
But it’s not just yesteryear merriment at Lewes as the town also adds a modern twist to its jubilee as it also incorporates a grand festival atmosphere with some of the best fireworks available.
Lewes also collaborates with a number of societies and brings in around 80,000 spectators and 5,000 visitors.
Lewes is a collaboration between multiple societies, with up to 5,000 people participating and 80,000 spectators attending.
The evening sees around seven societies putting on six separate firework displays and processions that take place throughout Lewes on November 5.
Around 25–30 societies from all around Sussex embark on Lewes, making this county market town the best place to be when it comes to Bonfire Night.
While fireworks are the main event of the evening, Bonfire Night also brings other activities including the barrel run where teams of people pull flaming tar barrels down Cliffe High Street and into the River Ouse.
Large effigies of political figures and Viking boats are also burned in bonfires but deep down the evening brings a rich sense of history and tradition.
This goes back years ago allowing residents of the town to celebrate and appreciate the ancient tradition of bonfire.
“This town is the most amazing place in the world to experience bonfire night the fireworks at landport were amazing stunning beautiful better than last year even if that’s possible just well done for the year-round things that the society’s do,” wrote one TripAdvisor.
With another adding: “Bonfire night is my favourite night of the year and I believe I have had my fix for the next 10 years!!!! The sky is on fire and the fireworks went for at least 2 hours, with people competing for the best display. It doesn’t really matter where you are in the town, you will get a good view.”
