For a long time, Amsterdam has been a tourist hotspot, but another city has built a reputation of being similar to the capital, only without all the noise.

Utrecht is the fourth-largest city in the Netherlands and is praised for its “atmospheric medieval centre”. The city, being full of greenery and parks, is described as one of the most cycle-friendly cities in the world.

With direct trains from Rotterdam and The Hague, the city is easily accessible for tourists who would like to pay a visit.

A Eurostar train from London’s St Pancras costing from £39 takes you straight to Amsterdam Central, where you take a 20-minute ride into the calm city. 

Utrecht is not short of things to do. Tourists can book a canal ride for just under £14.

The old canal stretches over 2km from the river Kromme and is split into three levels.

After the boat ride, tourists can enjoy the various options of cafes, bars and restaurants which are located on the central middle level of the canal.

The city is also home to beautiful museums such as the Centraal Museum, which explores Dutch artistic and cultural heritage from the 17th century to the present. It also costs just under £14 for admission.

Alternatively, there are some free activities for those travelling on a budget. Dom Square is an area in the city with historical remains and a church that is free to enter. 

Another offer is a free 2.5-hour tour of the city by volunteers who are passionate about the city.

The tours start and take place every Saturday at 12 pm at Dom Tower, and visitors do not need to register to take part.
