If you’re a fan of beer, Bratwurst, and affordable holiday hotspots, then you’re in for a treat.
Nestled almost two hours away from Munich and three hours from Frankfurt, Bamberg, in Upper Franconia, Germany, is one of Europe’s most picturesque, well-preserved, and “un-beer-lievable” destinations.
Regularly celebrated as one of the most beautiful cities in Europe, Bamberg boasts a UNESCO world heritage status to support its claim.
Often described as the “Franconian Rome”, the city of Bamberg is built on seven hills and is brimming with a ton of architectural wonders that date back to the Middle Ages.
This Bavarian city, home to just under 76,000 people, seamlessly blends modern life with historic cultural treasures of global significance.
Its streets are lined with buildings that have withstood the test of time, and its centre is filled with ornate palaces and medieval castles.
History enthusiasts will be enamoured by the magnificent 13-century Bamberg Cathedral, one of Germany’s most famous cathedrals.
Built between 1211 and 1237, this late Romanesque and early gothic landmark is distinguished as one of the only papal graves in Germany, housing the marble sarcophagus of Pope Clement II.
Another must-see is St.Michael’s Monastery. A baroque church featuring a beautiful “celestial garden” featuring over 578 flowers and herbs, and a terrace offering a panoramic view of the city.
Altenburg Castle, the Old Town Hall (Altes Rathaus), and the 17-century Neue Residenz palace, with its ornate ceilings, tapestries, and rose garden, are also essential stops.
Besides its rich history, Bamberg is also renowned for its vibrant beer culture.
The city is famous for its hand-crafted brews and unique smoked beer — known as Rauchbier — and is available in two of their local breweries, Schlenkerla and Brauerei Spezial.
With 13 breweries in the town itself and 60 more in the surrounding area, beer lovers will find plenty to explore.
This is not the only-must have when you arrive in this charming city. Local culinary delicacies are also a highlight. Try Schäuferla, a roasted shoulder of pork marinated in a meat stock and dark beer broth, served with potato dumplings and cabbage.
Another unique dish are their blue sausages, Blaue Zipfel – and yes these sausages are blue. These are typically boiled in a seasoned stock of onions, white wine, vinegar, and spices, providing a unique, rich smoky flavour. Served with a side of sauerkraut, a pretzel, and pint of smoked beer, it’s truly an unforgettable combination.
Travel vlogger Wolters World recently reviewed Bamberg in his latest YouTube video, “The Best Cheap European Destinations”.
He revealed that Bamberg was his “favourite city” to visit in Germany and humorously remarked that Bamberg’s prices have remained unchanged for the past decade, making it a budget-friendly option compared to other German cities.
While it does take a few hours to reach Bamberg by train or flight, the journey is well worth it for those who love bratwurst, beer, and history.
Bamberg’s alluring appeal and affordability make it an attractive destination for tourists.
