Tagged as ‘the most unsung location in Suffolk’, the seaside town of Lowestoft is further east than anywhere else in England. Complete with a pier, sand dunes and a zoo on it’s doorstep it is definitely not one to miss.
The town constantly appears on lists of the best seaside towns and the sunrises alone could be why.
It is home to South Beach (Victoria Beach) and is a regular winner of the Blue Flag award due to its exceptional environmental upkeep and clear waters.
Train buffs can indulge in the East Anglia Transport Museum and expand their knowledge in the Lowestoft & East Duffolk Maritime Museum.
Lowestoft is a hit with families with an array to see and do, if you get bored of admiring the coastal views you can drive to Pleasurewood Hills theme park or enjoy a night at the theatre which is home to the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.
Perhaps you can treat yourself to a pint of local Adnams beer in the top rate Jolly Sailors and Spring Tide pub?
Both establishments boast around 2,000 reviews praising the generous portions and electric atmosphere.
Visitors praise the town and enjoy strolling along the pier, admiring the boats and perusing the promenade.
However, not all visitors were left as stunned. One tourist wrote: “Shocking. Dirty. Grim.” and was unimpressed by the number of children roaming the town and homeless drunks slumped in doorways. Unfortunately it has lived up to the negative reputation that port towns often gain.
Like many town centers, Lowestoft can feel run down due to closure of shops and lack of social activity.
Some described it as a “ghost town” but still praised the beautiful beach. It has great potential to be a desirable destination and recent renovations are hopefully making this become a reality.
