The government has launched a pilot scheme that will provide entrepreneurs with informal advice on AI regulations.

The AI and Digital Hub will see regulators including the Competition and Markets Authority, Ofcom, the Financial Conduct Authority, and the Information Commissioner’s Office share information with businesses to help them navigate the UK’s regulatory environment.

The pilot, which is being supported with “close to £2m” in government funding, will run for 12 months. The government will then assess the long-term viability of the scheme.

The AI and Digital Hub will also serve as an opportunity for businesses to provide feedback on regulations.

The UK is yet to introduce its own AI regulations but in February published an AI whitepaper. In response, the government earmarked more than £100m to establish responsible artificial intelligence research hubs and make regulators AI-ready.

Meanwhile, the European Union approved the Artificial Intelligence Act, the world’s first major regulation of the technology, in March.

UK ministers have previously indicated they will not introduce its own new AI laws in a hurry.

“Through the AI and Digital Hub, we can bring groundbreaking innovators together with our expert regulators to streamline the process of harnessing the technology’s incredible potential,” said Michelle Donelan, the secretary of state for science, innovation, and technology.

“Our regulatory approach to AI places innovation at its heart, and this pilot scheme will play a vital role in helping us to refine that approach both now and in the years to come.”
