While it may not be one for the faint-hearted or those scared of heights, the world’s ‘longest’ suspension bridge is sure to wow thrillseekers as they pass hundreds of feet above a canyon.
The £3.8 million (€4.5m) Skywalk Willingen bridge, near to the German ski resort Willingen, is 664m (2,170ft) long, and sits around 100m (328ft) above the canyon below it.
The steel structure links people who are walking from the ski-jumping hill Muhlenkopfschanze to the Musenberg area. It is believed to be the longest unsupported pedestrian bridge.
Anchored by 36 steel supports drilled into the mountain below, it weighs in at around 120 tons and is capable of supporting 750 people as they cross.
Anyone brave enough to head across the Skywalk will get a stunning view of the surrounding region as well as being able to look on the ski slope below.
There is a cost to cross the bridge however, with anyone wanting to head over having to pay €11 (£9.40) for adults or €8.50 (£7.30) for children.
Ahead of its opening in 2023, chief executive Arndt Bruene told MailOnline: “You have respect, you have tension. It’s a living structure. So the bridge moves slightly with you, but in the end, it’s like wellness for the soul.”
Visitors on social media have been quick to praise the bridge.
One said: “The view is fantastic. It’s an exhilarating feeling to walk across it. However, some height-sensitive visitors apparently didn’t really enjoy it (or so it seemed). Great construction and very impressive. It’s definitely worth a visit.”
While another added: “Not for people who get dizzy quickly. The bridge is swinging quite nicely!
“Sensible shoes are recommended as there are fences on which to walk.”
Bookings for the Skywalk Willingen are available here. For anyone not quite feeling up to walk over the bridge, there is a webcam feed where you can see the structure from the comfort of your own home.
