Men’s BC1 individual bronze medal match
Disappointing news for ParalympicsGB in the boccia, after Indonesia’s Muhamad Syafa defeated previous Paralympic gold medallist David Smith 5-3 to grab bronze.
The Brit was ahead after the first end but lost the lead and, with it, his chances of a medal. Just like Claire Taggart, however, he will have another chance to pick up a medal in the mixed team competition.
Speaking about the depth of talent now within the sport, Smith said: “It’s definitely the toughest one [Paralympics] I’ve ever played in.
“The depth in the sport is so
different to when I won gold in Rio. In Tokyo, there were a few more, but it
was still mainly me and a couple of others.
“I’ve been clinging on to being
world number one with my fingernails knowing there are people ready to take it. Unfortunately, this time round it was not to be, but we
still have the team event to go and I think we have a good chance.”
