Day nine of the Olympics arrives with 20 gold medals up for grabs including one of the most coveted in the men’s 100m final at Paris 2024.
World champion Noah Lyles and Kishane Thompson feature in an exciting battle to become the fastest man in the world in the 100m final – while Great Britain’s Zharnel Hughes and Louie Hinchliffe will hope to join them in the final at the Stade de France.
Britain’s Harry Hepworth won his first Olympic medal with bronze on the vault, after Algeria’s Kaylia Nemour stunned on the uneven bars for Africa’s first gymnastics gold.
Novak Djokovic edged out Carlos Alcaraz in the men’s singles final at Roland Garros and Tommy Fleetwood settled for silver in the men’s golf after a sensational display from Scottie Scheffler landed the world No.1 gold at Le Golf National.
In the last night of the swimming, Great Britain’s men’s relay team fell just short, finishing fourth as Adam Peaty returned and faced home hero Leon Marchand in his leg, but China, USA and France proved too strong in the men’s 4x100m medley. Olympics 2024: Final swimming medal table
We do still have the the men’s and women’s open water events to come, but that’s that for the action in the pool at La Defense Arena for these Olympics. A brilliant venue and an outstanding swim meet, with the United States (just about) still on top.
1 United States (28 medals: 8 golds, 13 silvers, 7 bronzes)
2 Australia (18: 7G, 8S, 3B)
Great Britain finish with one gold and four silvers.

Olympics 2024: Men’s 400m heats
Charles Dobson is in action, after Matthew Hudson-Smith booked his place in the semi-final.
In the final heat, Dobson was put in a middle lane and started well, he ran 44.23 a fortnight ago – but that was a lifetime best.
The Kenyan runner has pulled up in pain and had to drop out, Dobson pushes up into third, and he will cross the line first!
Dobson crosses the line in 44.96, never had to hit top gear and just eased through.
It was the slowest time of all six heats, but that will not matter to Dobson who is safely through.

Olympics 2024: Swimming – United States win women’s medley relay in new world record!
A tour de force to conclude the pool programme at Paris 2024! The United States top the medal table by taking out women’s 4x100m medley relay gold and shattering their own world record (3min 49.63sec).
Regan Smith, Lilly King, Gretchen Walsh and Torri Huske combine to devastating effect to leave the rest in their wake. Mollie O’Callaghan blasts home to secure silver for Australia; China beat Canada to the bronze.

Olympics 2024: Swimming – women’s 4x100m medley relay
So much for Australia pushing the United States – the USA are absolutely dominating! Regan Smith, Lilly King and Gretchen Walsh are way ahead of world record pace as Torri Huske hurls herself into the pool…

Olympics 2024: Swimming – final race of the meet
Already in the pool are the women’s 4x100m medley quartets. USA look scarily strong with Regan Smith, Lilly King, Gretchen Walsh and Torri Huske – three of the quartet that won gold at the Worlds in Budapest last year. Australia are ever the danger, though, and pipped their great rivals in Tokyo. They have the chance to top the swimming medal table at the Americans’ expense.

Olympics 2024: Adam Peaty unsure over future plans as he hints at retirement
“If my heart wants it, my heart wants it, and I’ll absolutely sign that contract with myself to do it,” Peaty says to the BBC about potentially going on to LA 2028. “But that may be a long way away. I think I have got to step away from the sport. It’s just hurt too much this time.
“I don’t know what the answer is. If my family needs me, my family needs me. If they want me to do it…I don’t know. If your heart doesn’t want it, your heart doesn’t want it. We are going to enjoy today rather than worry about tomorrow.”

Olympics 2024: Swimming – Team GB’s medley relay swimmers speak to the BBC
Oliver Morgan: “Happy with that. I think that was my fastest swim this week, so to be producing that, I’m happy. We would have liked to have been in the medals, but it is a tough field and we’ll be back. I was really happy to step up with these three boys.
Adam Peaty: “I said I was going to forget the body. I saw these boys this morning, we got a good meal. I’m really happy. It’s my only swim this whole Games where I’ve been really happy because of certain circumstances, but unfortunately in our sport you only truly get to plan a peak once every four years. You can miss it by one week, which I have due to my illness. But you can’t throw your toys out of the pram.
Duncan Scott: “It’s tough going against the best in the world anyway, but when it is a slightly off event, it’s harder. I did what I could in there next to Dressel and plenty of others, and it’s a really nice finish to the meet for me. I always enjoy getting together with the boys for the relays. I think we can all hold our heads high. We’ve had a few fourths and some unlucky touches, but as a whole we can be incredibly proud.”

Olympics 2024: Men’s 400m heats
There is surprising news from the men’s 400m, we have already seen some of the top athletes pull out, but now the reigning Olympic champion Steven Gardiner has withdrawn from the 400m heats.
He will not have the opportunity to defend his title.
Gardiner, from the Bahamas, had been due to run in heat four, which was won by the USA’s Quincy Hall in a time of 44.28 seconds.

Olympics 2024: Swimming – China win GOLD in men’s 4x100m medley relay
Tough for Great Britain, who knew they had to nail it to have a shot at a medal. Beating China or the United States was probably beyond them, but Duncan Scott just didn’t quite have enough to stay with France’s Maxime Grousset on the butterfly leg. It is the one area where Team GB are really lacking a specialist – Scott’s chase of Jason Kenny’s medal record will have to resume in Los Angeles, if the Scotsman fancies it.
That could, equally, be the final time that we see Scott and Adam Peaty in an Olympic pool.

Olympics 2024: Swimming – China win GOLD in men’s 4x100m medley relay
Unstoppable! Pan Zhanle with another truly astonishing 100m freestyle (45.92sec) to snatch gold for China, blowing by both Florent Manaudou and Hunter Armstrong to hand the United States their first ever Olympic defeat in this event.
The United States come through for the silver with sprint specialist Manaudou fading a little as expected in the final metres. But a bronze is an excellent result for France as Leon Marchand adds another medal to his collection. For Team GB, close but no cigar – they touch the wall fourth.
