Novak Djokovic’s Wimbledon opponent, Jacob Fearnley, has sized up the ‘intimidating’ match between the pair with a very telling comment. Fearnley, 22, has admitted that while he may feel the pressure of coming up against the elite Serbian athlete, he is still “super excited” to share the court with him.
The young British tennis player recently won his first singles title on the ATP Challenger Tour and has been handed a wildcard for this year’s Wimbledon to make his Grand Slam debut.
Fearnley is feeling the anticipation ahead of his match against Djokovic and has admitted that the nerves are beginning to settle in ahead of facing a player he admires.
Speaking to the Metro, Fearnley said: “Yeah, it’s going to be a little bit intimidating, but it’s a match that I’m super excited for. It’s the biggest match of my career so far. Just to be able to share the court with a player like that will be really special.”
Djokovic has also promised to “do his homework” when it comes to facing Fearnley as he has yet to see the young Edinburgh-born athlete play on the court.
The 24-time Grand Slam champion said: “No, I haven’t seen him hit. I don’t know really anything about him. So I’ll have to do my homework. I know he was granted a wildcard to play in the tournament. So yeah, I’ll definitely analyse his match and see what I’m up against.”
Djokovic also admitted that it would be a tough round to play due to Fearnley’s national status being British – as the Wimbledon crowd love to get behind their homegrown talent.
The Serbian added: “Obviously him being British, he’s going to have the crowd. You never like to play the British at Wimbledon.
” But, you know, I’m looking forward to it. For me, it’s just about really maintaining this good sensation, good feelings on the court, getting my body and knee in shape to sustain the high level of potential five sets. That’s what matters most.”
Fearnley has also shown his hand in the fact that he doesn’t have many “tactics” to beat Djokovic on the court on Thursday afternoon. The young athlete has said that he is aiming to “enjoy” the match and “see what happens”.
The wildcard star said: “I’ve watched so many videos of him. It doesn’t look like there’s many flaws in his game.
“I’m going to just try and enjoy it, put my game out on the court and see what happens. I don’t think there’s many tactics going into the match.”
