The Oldham Amateur Rugby League is seeking nominations for the positions of league secretary and league treasurer, two senior appointments to which candidates will be elected at the league’s AGM.

This will take place on Wednesday, July 10 at Springhead Sports and Social Club, Oldham Road, Springhead, OL4 5SN, starting at 7.30pm.

Interested applicants must be nominated and seconded by a full member club of the league and must forward a CV with their application to the current league secretary, the long-serving Phil Bradbury, at this email address: philipbradbury54@outlook.com or by post to: 54, Esther Street, Greenacres, Oldham OL4 3EP by Friday, May 31.

The league would also be interested to hear from anyone who might be interested in joining the its executive committee.

The Oldham Amateur League plays a massive role in the organisation of community rugby league in one of the most productive towns in the sport’s heartlands, given the number of Oldham-born players currently playing in Super League or in the Championship and numbers in the past – these including Kevin Sinfield, Iestyn Harris, Paul Sculthorpe, Danny Sculthorpe and Barrie McDermott.

Heading the list right now is Marc Sneyd of Salford, twice a Lance Todd Trophy winner at Wembley, who was reared first at Oldham St Anne’ and later at Waterhead Warriors.

Also from Oldham, who provided the first secretary of the Northern Union (Joseph Platt in 1895 at the time of the great breakaway) is well-known former top referee and now a leading RFL official Robert Hicks, not to mention former Great Britain coach Phil Larder.

The Standard Cup, the final of which returned to Boundary Park this year and attracted one of the best attendances for years (1,847) is one of the league’s major successes.

Rochdale Mayfield beat Waterhead in the final to retain the trophy they won last year.

The league is working closely with Oldham RLFC and the other rugby league organisations in the town such as Rugby Oldham, the pro club’s Supporters Trust, that club’s Foundation, the Oldham RL Heritage Trust and Oldham Council to re-generate rugby league interest and ambition under the banner: “We’re all in this together.”
