Just a few days ago we had new from Vinted saying that UK consumers are very open to secondhand shopping this festive season. Now research from Depop confirms that trend and also offers insights into the specific fashion brands and items secondhand shoppers are seeking.
The company said that as many as 27.3 million Britons will shop for gifts more sustainably this year. Its research among 2,000 UK consumers revealed that more than a third of them want to buy their gifts secondhand, and the most-wanted items include vintage bags and jackets, colourful scarves, unique sneakers and retro graphic tees with Nike the top trending brand.
Some 65% of Britons will be shopping more sustainably overall with buying secondhand the top option (34%). Meanwhile 24% will support local businesses and 23% say they’ll buy fewer but higher-quality items that last longer.
But one issue for those wanting to gift secondhand items is that 40% aren’t sure whether it’s polite to do so and 26% are convinced it isn’t polite.
They could be wrong though, as the research from Depop shows that 66% of respondents would be open to receiving secondhand rather than new due to cost (42%), quality (39%), and environmental concerns (35%).
So, as mentioned, the most-wanted secondhand items for women this season are vintage bags and jackets (14%), and colourful scarves (12%). For men, popular choices include unique sneakers (11%) and retro graphic tees (8%). Also popular are other accessories, chunky knit sweaters, oversized hoodies, statement jewellery and vintage boots.
Heritage designer labels continue to exercise a strong hold on shoppers, but streetwear staples are rising in resale popularity. The most wish-listed secondhand brand this year is Nike (17%), followed by Adidas (15%), Gucci (15%), Levi’s (11%) and Prada (10%). Zara, New Balance, Ugg, Dr Martens and Vans are also in demand.
