The trend for exaggerated hips has been on the rise in recent seasons, with Louis Vuitton, Balmain and Thom Browne among the designers showcasing structural shapes on the catwalk. This week, both Nicole Kidman and Zoe Saldana took the trend to the red carpet at the Los Angeles premiere of Lioness season two.
Kidman, who stars in the action drama TV series alongside Saldana, showcased the hip-focused trend in a Bottega Veneta spring/summer 25 ensemble. It featured a white backless halter-neck top and a yellow, cream and white pleated skirt with a second, shorter layer of pleats adding volume around the waist. Her look was finished with white heeled pumps, sleek, straight hair and sparkling hooped earrings.
Saldana went for a more theatrical look in spring/summer 25 Balmain. The silk top with frayed edges was paired with a dramatic floor-length skirt which had a cummerbund above sharp, square hips. Colourful earrings and black, strappy sandals completed her outfit.
While not the easiest trend to pull off, experimenting with structure can instantly add visual impact to an evening look. While Balmain’s take on the trend is at the bolder end of the spectrum, frills or folds of fabric around the hips are a more subtle way to experiment with the look. A fitted bodice with a flowing, voluminous skirt will also elongate the waist with its curved silhouette, while a tulip shape mini dress will naturally accentuate the hips. To avoid going OTT, let the dress or skirt do the talking and keep accessories to a minimum.
