The Daily Telegraph reports, external that Sir Keir Starmer will use the third anniversary of the start of the Ukraine war, on Monday, to announce new support for President Volodymyr Zelensky’s administration. Sources have suggested to the paper that the prime minister will risk the ire of Donald Trump – who has been sharply critical of the Ukrainian leader – by announcing more military aid, new sanctions on more Russians, and a new scheme to track the money of oligarchs linked to Vladimir Putin. The paper says such action is in “stark contrast” to Trump’s approach.
But, according to the Guardian – Sir Keir will not challenge the US president, external over his characterisation of Zelensky as a dictator, who started the war with Russia, during next week’s visit to the US. It says the prime minister will aim to defuse the escalating war of words between the White House and its traditional allies in Europe on the trip. “It is always better to focus on the future than going over the arguments of the past,” a British official tells the paper.
