Starting January 8, 2025, new travel regulations will require US, Canadian, and many non-European passport holders to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) before entering or transiting through the United Kingdom. This requirement applies to all parts of the UK, including Northern Ireland and British Overseas Territories, unless travelers already possess a valid UK visa or legal residency in the UK or the Republic of Ireland.
You will no longer be allowed to make regular journeys without an ETA if you previously only had your passport. To prevent problems with aeroplane boarding or UK entry, travellers must confirm their estimated time of arrival before departure.
Additionally, beginning April 2, 2025, the ETA requirement will expand to most European countries. However, some nationalities, including travelers from China and India, will not be eligible for an ETA and must continue to apply for a visa.

Like the ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorisation) in the US, the ETA is a component of the UK’s shift to a computerised border system. It ensures more efficient entrance procedures and improved security measures by acting as a pre-clearance requirement for travellers.
An ETA is required for all US nationals travelling to or passing through UK airports without a visa or proof of residency in the UK or Ireland. This criterion expedites the border entrance process by guaranteeing that travellers are pre-screened before arrival.

Travellers can apply for an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) online at the official UK government website: Apply for an ETA. Travellers should apply ahead of time to prevent any travel difficulties, but the process is simple.
The ETA was introduced with the intention of improving security and facilitating easier access to the UK. Travellers can avoid last-minute hassles by planning ahead and applying for their ETA well in advance of their travel dates. Visit the UK government’s official website for the most recent information and application instructions.
