M&S will this week launch a collection created in collaboration with Bella Freud, who’s best known for her slogan sweaters and her quirky, boyish womenswear style.
It’s the first time her signature looks will be available at accessible price points with slogan cashmere sweaters a key part of the mix, alongside a pinstripe suit, a pleated mini skirt, scarves, a blouse, tote bags and bootcut jeans in a 27-piece offer.
The slogans for the M&S sweaters include Honey, Nature, Blue Sky and Divine Feminine. They retail at £129, which is several hundred pounds below the price of a mainline Bella Freud sweater, while the suit will come in at less than £220 (compared to £1,000+ for her label). So the M&S pieces are clearly not cheap but prices are affordable for Freud aficionados.
Another difference is in sizing with the M&S pieces going from 6-24 compared to 6-16 for her mainline, which has been a favourite of style influencers such as Jane Birkin, Kate Moss and Alexa Chung.
The offer will be available online as well as in 31 UK M&S stores from Thursday with M&S MD of Clothing & Home Richard Price saying “the collaboration delivers a fun, authentic, diffusion and introduces Bella Freud to a wider audience. The exclusive collection celebrates Bella’s signature style and coveted designs, underpinned by the quality and trusted value of M&S.”
Freud has also done a series of interviews stressing the quality of the pieces produced by M&S and the attention to detail.
And on Instagram, she highlighted her long-standing love of M&S. She said her “collaboration with it has been a dream in terms of combined vision”. And she also relayed the story of how disappointed she was when her progressive school abolished uniforms and how she “spent time gazing at the window displays of V-necks and pleated skirts in my local Marks and Spencer. It seemed to me like a marvellous emporium full of desirable things. The ordered elegance of these garments, the immaculateness of them was so appealing. I wanted these well-made simple pieces to provide me with a protective shield, some armour to contain all my inner turbulence”.
