Mini has seen a surge in sales of electric vehicles, propelling the carmaker to become the eight most popular EV brand so far this year, fresh data has shown.

The firm registered 2,484 new EVs in the first two months of 2025, a sixfold increase compared to the previous year, according to figures from New Automotive.

It follows the launch of the new electric Mini Aceman compact SUV in 2024, as well as new electric Cooper and Countryman models.

The carmaker now controls a 5% share of the battery electric vehicle (BEV) market in the UK, up from less than 1% a year ago.

Total UK BEV sales in January and February rose 37.4% to top 20,000, with the vehicles now accounting for more than one in four car registrations.

Ben Nelmes, CEO of New AutoMotive, said: “Motorists are voting with their feet, with one in four confident enough to make the switch to an electric car in February.

“The latest figures show that the UK’s policies to encourage electric vehicle adoption are working. Ministers should stay the course and give businesses and consumers the certainty they need to invest in an electric future.

“Carmakers have invested billions in bringing EVs to market, and the UK’s energy sector is investing billions in charge points, creating jobs in every nation and region of the UK. Now is the time to build on this momentum, not slow down.”

Sales of Teslas made a marked recovery in February compared to a lacklustre start to the year in January, according to the figures, with a net increase of just under 400 registrations across the two months compared to last year.

But the data showed Tesla continued to lose market share, recording the second-slowest sales growth out of the top-ten most popular EV brands.

While the US carmaker continued to be the top-selling EV brand with 5,330 registrations, its overall share of the UK BEV market fell three percentage points to 10.8%.
