The Kentucky Wildcats are coming off a huge win against the Florida Gators at Rupp Arena on Saturday afternoon, making it their third top-10 win this season.
A big reason for that win was Amari Williams. The Drexel transfer impressed as he finished with 15 points on 6/7 shooting. He also added eight rebounds, five assists, and only one turnover in his 22 minutes on the court.
It’s no secret that the season has been filled with ups and downs for Williams. It sounds like Williams and Mark Pope had a solid one-on-one conversation that has helped lead to the turnaround.
“Six games ago, we kind of had one of those come to [Jesus] meetings where we’re like, ‘OK, we gotta fix some things,’” Pope said after the 106-100 win over the Gators. “Amari, at the time, he had just fallen under the water assist to turnover-wise, so he was less assists than turnovers. And for guys on our team, bigs, that handle the ball so much and have to be decision-makers, that was a real problem.”
Thankfully, that’s improved in a big way, and we saw a glimpse of that vs. the Gators.
“So since then, the last six games, before this game, he was 4.5 assists to every turnover. That’s how much he changed. Tonight, he had five assists to one turnover in this high-level game. 6/7 from the field. Eight rebounds. He was spectacular today. I’m so proud of him.”
If the Wildcats want to continue to be the best version of themselves, they’ll need this play from Williams to continue. If it does, the Cats will be a tough team to beat.
