The Kentucky Wildcats continue to win, despite dealing with several injuries at the point guard position in recent weeks.
First, it was Lamont Butler going down with an ankle injury that ended up costing him two games. Then, Kerr Kriisa suffered a foot injury that required foot surgery and could knock him out of action for around a month.
Butler did manage to return to have an epic performance in a 93-85 win over the Louisville Cardinals. More importantly, he didn’t suffer any setbacks.
On Wednesday, head coach Mark Pope commented on the injury status of Butler and Kriisa Wednesday, giving positive updates on both.
“We’ve been super careful (with Butler). We kept him out of contact yesterday. But I think he’s over it, right? I think we move on, hopefully, with that,” Pope said.
Butler, at least against Louisville, looked at full strength and went off on the Wildcats’ rival. He put up a game-high 33 points in the win and looked every bit of a point guard that could captain a championship-winning squad.
That said, depth at the position, especially at the point guard and along the backcourt, is key to long-term success.
On top of Butler, Kriisa is also making good progress in his rehab.
“Kerr had his first day in the weight room doing conditioning and strength training yesterday. Our goal is to make that so unpleasant that he’s like, ‘I’m getting back on the court,’” Pope said.
Pope did make it clear that Kriisa’s recovery and eventual return will be hard to pinpoint for the time being.
“This is a little bit of a tricky surgery. It could respond fast, or it could respond slow,” Pope said. “We’re gonna do everything in our power to help. He’s gonna do everything in his power to get himself ready as soon as he can. Hopefully, that comes sooner rather than later, but there are some things that are gonna be out of his control.”
The No. 4 Wildcats may need all hands on deck for when they take on No. 7 Florida on January 4. Until then, they have battles with Ohio State and Brown, two games in which the Cats should be double-digit favorites in.
