This popular airline may be increasing its flights to a top winter tourist destination.
Jet2 has said it could potentially expand its flights to long-haul routes, while it’s not a plan of the airline now, it has not been ruled out for the future, reports Travel Weekly.
The airline’s furthest destination is currently Paphos, in Cyprus and this is where the company held its conference last week. It said Egypt, which is just one hour further than Paphos, is one destination it is considering adding flights to.
Egypt is known for its warm temperatures and in December, it can reach 24C, making it a popular destination for some winter sun.
Jet2’s chief executive said the airline has thought about whether it will expand into further destinations, saying “possibly one day we’ll do it”.
When asked during a travel agent Q&A session about whether Jet2 would ever add long-haul routes to its network, Steve Heapy said it would be “operationally quite complicated and expensive” due to limits relating to pilots’ contractual working hours, but added: “That’s not the reason we’ve not done it.”
Mr Heapy said the airline has prioritised other destinations and has launched three new bases.
The airline has recently prioritised its expansion into Morocco and has expanded the number of cities it flies to.
Jet2 said it continues to consider new destinations and it has a list of cities which it is currently considering.
On the prospect of flying further, Mr Heapy said: “Possibly one day we’ll do it. I’m not saying we will, I’m not saying we won’t.”
The airline will be announcing another two or three routes in the next few months, says Mr Heapy.
Another agent in the audience asked whether Jet2 would ever launch a cruise-and-stay option with P&O Cruises, as it currently partners with the cruise line on flights to the Canary Islands.
“Possibly one day,” he answered. “Maybe in the future we would do that as it’s sort of a natural extension to what we currently do. At the end of the day, a cruise ship is a floating hotel.”
