Liverpool news as Arne Slot’s men are due to face Manchester United at Anfield on Sunday evening but the match could be in doubt due to a weather warning and the forecast for snow
Liverpool’s late Sunday afternoon crunch clash with rivals Manchester United will have to get through an amber weather warning. With a chilling forecast of temperatures plunging below zero throughout the UK, there’s a possibility of Merseyside being blanketed in snow.
The Met Office has warned of significant disruption due to ‘snow and freezing rain [that] will likely lead to disruption to transport and some other services.’ Parts of the country may see up to 40 centimetres of snow.
An official statement reads: “Snow will become persistent and locally heavy as it pushes south to north across the warning area,” further noting, “As well as snow, a period of freezing rain is also likely bringing some hazardous travel conditions, before milder air follows across all areas by Sunday morning.”
It outlines what could follow: “While there’s some uncertainty in details, 3-7cm of snow is likely for most of the warning area, with locally 15-30cm for the higher ground of Wales and the southern Pennines. Freezing rain could lead to ice accretion in places, especially parts of Wales – before the milder air leads to a rapid thaw of snow and ice in the south of the warning area through Sunday.”
This comes just a month after Liverpool’s clash with Everton at Goodison Park was called off due to Storm Darragh’s heavy rain and extreme winds, highlighting weather concerns once again in the region. In the north west, potential ice and snow expected from 8pm on Saturday could continue until 8am on Sunday, throwing plans into uncertainty.
A slew of matches across the Football League and non-league were called off, hinting at potential issues that could arise. Sleet showers are also forecasted for Sunday morning, starting from 11am.
Furthermore, fans have been urged to stay informed on the latest travel advice for safety and accessibility. This is particularly crucial for visiting United supporters.
The National Highways agency has stated that the A628 Snake Pass between Sheffield and Manchester is expected to shut down at 10pm as a precautionary measure, which could impact some of those not travelling to the match from the city itself.
