It’s not much of a surprise, but Mark Pope announced today that Kentucky Wildcats guard Kerr Kriisa will miss the remainder of the season.
The fifth-year guard, who transferred to Kentucky from West Virginia, underwent surgery for a broken foot in December. He suffered the injury in Kentucky’s victory over Gonzaga back on December 7.
“We’re past the window now where he could actually get back,” Pope told reporters on Thursday. “It’s been a little bit of a stubborn healing process, and he just hasn’t reached the benchmarks he’s needed to get to in terms of that healing process.”
This comes as no surprise, really. Kriisa hasn’t practiced since the surgery, and it would take a significant amount of time to get back into proper conditioning to play in a game, even if the healing process was 100 percent complete.
Kriisa is eligible for a medical redshirt, so he could return for a sixth season of college basketball. Whether he will utilize that medical redshirt and whether that sixth year will be at Kentucky or somewhere else remains to be seen, but he at least has the option.
Kriisa wraps up his season at Kentucky with nine games played, averaging 4.4 points per game to go along with 2.4 rebounds and 3.8 assists. He had a season-high 12 assists in Kentucky’s win over Bucknell in the second game of the season. That’s the most assists by a Kentucky player in a game this season.
