ATLANTA — During his three seasons at Kentucky in the mid-1990s, Mark Pope never faced Duke.
But the former UK-player-turned coach gets his chance tonight, when he leads the team into a Champions Classic matchup against the fellow college basketball blue blood.
Pope aims to even the score against the Blue Devils since starting his coaching career. Almost seven years to the day, he squared off against Duke while guiding Utah Valley. The Blue Devils had no problem dispatching the Wolverines, winning 99-69 at Cameron Indoor Stadium on Nov. 11, 2017. That marked former coach Mike Krzyzewski‘s 1,000th victory at Duke.
Now, his former player and assistant Jon Scheyer is at the helm of the program.
After that 30-point loss to the Blue Devils, Pope said “this is where we’re trying to go, and we’re trying to get there fast.”
A win for No. 18 UK over No. 6 Duke — and handing ballyhooed Blue Devils freshman Cooper Flagg (projected as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft) his first loss as a collegian — would qualify as an emphatic statement for Pope in his maiden campaign coaching college basketball’s winningest program.
