Kentucky basketball: Mark Pope on win versus ‘hard-nosed’ Texas A&M
Kentucky basketball coach Mark Pope discusses the Wildcats beating a tough Texas A&M team Tuesday at Rupp Arena.
LEXINGTON — Fresh off what inarguably was the greatest season in school history, capped by Alabama‘s first Final Four appearance, Kentucky basketball coach Mark Pope lavished praise on his counterpart. Crimson Tide coach Nate Oats, Pope said, “has been incredible” in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, and has the program “in a great position,” both this season and those to come.
The Wildcats and Crimson Tide, both ranked among the top 10 in the two major polls (the USA TODAY Coaches and the Associated Press) square off today at Rupp Arena. They double as the two highest-scoring teams in the SEC: Alabama is tied for first nationally (alongside Iowa) at 89.5 points per game, with UK next in line at 88.7.
The Wildcats and Crimson Tide like to push the pace, space the floor and drain 3s.
“They’ve always been so potent, demanding that you guard space,” Pope said. “Their pace is elite. … When you break down their possession usage in the first six seconds and the second six seconds of the shot clock, after makes, that’s actually when they’re the most (dangerous).”
Their similar philosophies offensively is a gift and a curse, Pope believes.
“They’re really, really effective at the rim, and their volume from the 3-point line is intense, right?” said Pope, referring to Alabama’s 31.2 3-point attempts per game, tops in the conference. “They haven’t shot it great, but their volume is always scary. Like on the night when they’re making shots, it’s a long night for their opponent, for sure.”
