With just about every player from last season’s Kentucky roster either declared for the NBA Draft or in the transfer portal and most of the recruiting class gone, it will be a full rebuild for Mark Pope.
Pope just landed his first recruit as Kentucky’s head basketball coach in Collin Chandler. He committed to BYU as a top 40 recruit in the 2022 class but has yet to play a minute of college hoops as he has been on a mission trip. He will make his debut in college hoops as a 21-year-old freshman for the Wildcats next season.
Now Pope is looking to make his first transfer portal addition, and one serious target is former Northern Illinois star guard David Coit. He averaged 20.8 points per game a season ago, which was good for the 24th-best average in college hoops.
Coit is a smaller guard, standing 5’11, but he sure can score the basketball. He also averaged 3.4 assists and 3.2 rebounds last season for the Huskies. Coit shot 33.7% from three a year ago, which was down from the 22-23 season, where he shot 37.7%, but he is a high-volume shooter.
There were some games last season for NIU where he was shooting 12 threes himself.
He would fit in really well in Coach Pope’s system as he is a solid shooter who isn’t afraid to let it fly. Coit could become a star in Rupp Arena if he is able to start raining in threes for the Kentucky Wildcats.
This will be a name to monitor in the portal for the Kentucky Wildcats as they look to rebuild the roster.
