During the Test series against West Indies, Key is understood to have been quietly reviewing the World Cup campaign, which followed another botched title defence in the 50-over version last year. That has left both Buttler and head coach Matthew Mott’s positions in severe doubt, and it is thought Key will hold meetings with both in the coming days about their positions.
Key appointed Mott when he took the job in 2022, just before long-time captain Eoin Morgan retired suddenly during a series in the Netherlands, leading to Buttler’s ascension to the top job.
It is understood that Buttler’s leadership has been criticised as feedback is compiled from players and backroom staff but, at 33, he may decide to step down from the role.
Exactly where England would turn if he did leave the role is unclear, with his vice-captain Moeen Ali now 37, and a lack of obvious alternatives complicated further by the regular clashes between the Test and white-ball teams’ schedules. For instance, England’s series against Australia in September begins just one day after the third Test against Sri Lanka ends, effectively ruling out any player from appearing in both.
It is expected that Phil Salt will take over from Buttler as the Originals captain, which is likely to please the England hierarchy as they seek more opportunities for the next generation of white-ball players to take on leadership roles. Northern Superchargers, who are coached by England assistant Andrew Flintoff, have appointed Harry Brook as their captain for the tournament. He will be available at the conclusion of the Test series against West Indies.
