Jaxson Robinson was brought in from BYU in the offseason to be this year’s main bucket-getter for this Kentucky Wildcats squad, but throughout the season, more often than not, it hasn’t exactly been that way.
It hasn’t been any secret that Robinson has lacked toughness in quite a few outings for the Cats this year, but as of late, he’s been playing at a remarkably high level.
This past Saturday, Robinson had his best game in a Wildcat uniform as he went for 27 points while shooting 7/10 from distance as the Cats came out of Starkville with a 95-90 victory over No. 14 Mississippi State.
Robinson then put together another great performance Tuesday night against No. 11 Texas A&M, finishing with 22 points and five triples while tying his season-high in rebounds with eight as the Cats surged past the Aggies 81-69.
After the game, head coach Mark Pope said this is about as good as he’s even seen the super senior play. That’s really saying something since the two have now been together for three seasons.
“I think it’s probably the most well-rounded that I’ve seen him play. The 27 and the 22 (points) stand out. One game on the road, one game here against essentially two top-10 teams,” said Pope after Kentucky’s win over the Aggies.
What really stands out to Pope is how Robinson’s defense has improved.
“It’s really not the scoring. It’s his contribution on the defensive end,” said Pope. “He had a huge defensive play in the guts of the game where he had to pick up the point, and (Texas A&M guard Zhuric) Phelps is devastating off the bounce. He caused Alabama so much (trouble). When you watch the film, he was just causing so much frustration.
“Because he was getting downhill every time, Jaxson immediately jumped in, met him with the championship chest, took away the reject, and it was fine. He’s making plays like that consistently on the defensive end.”
We also have to mention Robinson has been better at avoiding turnovers, despite handling the ball as much as he does. After having four turnovers vs. Louisville, he has just four over his last six games vs. nine assists.
The Jaxson Robinson we’ve seen the last couple of games is the Jaxson Robinson that the BBN faithful have been waiting to see more often throughout the season. His constant moving without the ball, his being fully engaged on both ends of the floor, and, most importantly, his aggressive and efficiency on the offensive end make this team even more dangerous.
If this is the Jaxson Robinson that shows up for the rest of the season, the Wildcats will most definitely be tough to beat come March.
There’s no question that Robinson’s recent play is raising Kentucky’s ceiling. If he continues to perform at this level, what is this team’s true ceiling?
