Great Britain’s Jack Draper is hoping to reach his first ever Grand Slam quarter-final when he takes on Czech Republic’s Tomas Machac at the US Open this evening.
The British No. 1 defeated the Netherlands’ Botic van de Zandschulp 6-3 6-4 6-2 in straight sets on Saturday to reach the fourth round and equal his best ever performance at a tennis major.
Draper, who has battled against injuries this season, says he is now full fit and aiming to reach to the latter stages of the tournament at Flushing Meadows.
“I feel very different to last year,” he said, “I think I barely played any tennis in the year, struggling with injuries all the time, and then obviously came here. I feel very different now. I’m not waking up every day worried about playing five sets.”
Today’s match is the second ATP Tour meeting between the two with Machac triumphing in the previous one 7-6 (8-6) 6-1 in Geneva back in May.

Jack Draper 6-3 1-0 Tomas Machac*
Draper picks up where he left off in the first set. His serve is on point and he’s finding the edge of the lines and the corners of the court.
The confidence is on clear display and he takes this first game in the second set with a glorious forehand slice that just drops over the top of the net.

Jack Draper 6-3 Tomas Machac – SET!

Incredible start from Jack Draper.

Jack Draper 5-3 Tomas Machac*
There are a bunch of unforced errors creeping into Machac’s game which allows Draper to open up a 0-30 lead against the serve. Machac pulls a point back but a blistering backhand down the line from the Brit sets up two set points.
He sends a return of serve out of play with the first one then whips an attempted forehand winner wide to take the game to deuce. Good work from Machac to stay in this game…

Jack Draper 5-3 Tomas Machac*
Wow! Looking to immediately break back Machac is trying to overpower Draper with strong hits from the baseline.
The Czech takes the first point then drills one across court only for Draper’s forehand response to come fizzing down the line leaving him no chance to get it back.
At 15-15, Draper takes the next point but then scuffs one high and wide to bring Machac back on level terms. An ace out wide gives him a shot at holding serve to complete the break and he secures it!
Another wide serve sees Machac loop the ball back and Draper sweeps up the court to power a backhand winner past his opponent.

*Jack Draper 4-3 Tomas Machac – BREAK!
This is a chance. Draper works hard to edge 15-30 in front but an onslaught from Machac should bring him level. Draper defends and loops a shot back over to his opponent’s side but Machac’s attempted smash lands in the net!
Draper has a couple of break points but only needs one. Machac is too keen again and pumps one long. Draper has the advantage in the set now.

Jack Draper 3-3 Tomas Machac*
Shall we just skip to a tiebreaker?
Draper serves down another hold to love and both these players seem super confident on serve. If things stay like this the first set will have to be decided by a tie break.

This one is shaping up nicely.
Tomas Machac goes through another service game to love and keeps the first set on serve. No inroads made from Jack Draper thus far.

Jack Draper 2-2 Tomas Machac*
Draper is getting his serve to click and sends down consecutive aces to put himself 40-15 up. A third serve down the centre line results in another ace and Draper takes the game in quick fashion.
‘Good energy’ cheers his coach from the stands.

*Jack Draper 1-2 Tomas Machac
This match already feels like one which is too close to call either way. Small margins, such as whoever breaks first or whoever feels more fatigue, could swing it either way.
Machac is more controlled on his serve, at least until he double faults to leave this third game 30-15. He just seems to have lost a bit of rhythm but Draper can’t capitalise on the second serve.
A couple of well placed and accurate forehands put Machac back on top and he wins the game with a great overhand smash!

Jack Draper ready to go beyond US Open fourth round
Jack Draper says he is in a far better place going into the US Open fourth round than this time last year.
Draper repeated his career-best grand slam performance when he made the second week at Flushing Meadows by beating Carlos Alcaraz’s slayer Botic van de Zandschulp on Saturday.
It means he is back in the fourth round for a second successive year, but the British number one was playing through pain in an injury-ravaged 2023.
