When you think of Florida, you might first think of the theme parks of Orlando or the electric streets of Miami, however according to one holidaymaker there is a lesser-known beach destination where you can beat the crowds.
Marketing manager Abby Dunn from Ocean Florida Breaks, who has travelled to Florida over 40 times, shared some of her favourite destinations in the Sunshine State that “you may have never heard of” – including a beautiful beach island where you can escape the hustle and bustle of some of the region’s more popular hotspots.
If a romantic beach holiday is what you have in mind, Abby says that Florida is a great option.” Thanks to its hot and sunny climate all year round, Florida is a popular destination amongst Brits, but with so many beautiful areas to visit from Miami to Orlando, it can be hard to decide where to stay,” she said.
“Like any destination, different areas provide different benefits so where you choose really should depend on who you’re travelling with and the type of trip you’re looking to take.”
Around a two-hour drive from Orlando and four hours from Miami, Anna Maria Island is a barrier island on the coast of Manatee County, Florida, in the United States. It is bounded on the west by the Gulf of Mexico, on the south by Longboat Pass (which separates it from Longboat Key), on the east by Anna Maria Sound, and on the north by Tampa Bay.
“Located on the Gulf Coast, Anna Maria Island is a breathtaking location,” explained Abby. “Uncrowded beaches and a laid-back atmosphere make this spot great for couples looking for a tranquil experience. Whether you’re taking a sunset cruise, walking along the beach, or dining on the oceanfront, it really is the perfect romantic backdrop.
“Not all couples love to relax all the time though, which isn’t a problem on this beautiful island. From shops and galleries to museums and historical sites, there’s plenty of local charm to explore. If that’s not enough though, Tampa is just 45 minutes away, so a day trip is always on the table.”
With stunning surrounding waters and beautiful sun-filled days, the beach is an obvious must-visit when on the island. Some of the island’s most popular beaches include its namesake Anna Maria Beach, along with Bean Point, Coquina Beach, Cortez Beach and Manatee Beach.
The island has previously been referred to as Florida’s “best kept secret”, making it a favourite for celebrities such as Cameron Diaz and Jared Leto over the years, though it has become increasingly more popular.
Despite this, it still remains far less crowded than some of the state’s more well-known destinations.
Winter tends to be the off-season for tourists on the barrier island, so if you really want peace and tranquility consider a visit outside of the summer season. Even in January, the island experiences average highs of 22C, which rises to 25C in March.
The Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport is the closest airport to Anna Maria Island, which is approximately a 30-minute drive away.
