Liverpool‘s Premier League match against Manchester United will go ahead despite snowy weather after two safety meetings on Sunday.
Officials will met at 12pm to allow as much time as possible for the game to go ahead, after a discussion by Liverpool city council’s safety advisory group earlier on Sunday morning.
The issue was not about the pitch, which has specialised heating and is already playable, but about safe access to the ground by supporters and staff with the ice, cold and sleet.
A cold snap has hit across the UK, with both Manchester and Liverpool covered by an amber weather warning due to snow and ice.
Both local airports temporarily closed their runways, with Manchester Airport reopening shortly before 10am.
And a host of games across the men’s and women’s football pyramids have been postponed, including League Two matches at Chesterfield and Fleetwood.
Hull City vs Stourbridge in the Women’s National League and Nottingham Forest vs Burnley in the Women’s FA Cup have also been moved.
Liverpool are aiming to extend their lead at the top of the Premier League table to eight points, having already had one match this season postponed due to bad weather.
Arne Slot’s side are unbeaten in 23 games this season and play Tottenham on Wednesday in the Carabao Cup semi-final first leg.
Meanwhile United have lost four games in row, without scoring in the last three, to slip to 14th, 14 points behind Chelsea in fourth.
Liverpool said in a statement: “Today’s fixture against Manchester United will go ahead as planned. Two safety meetings were held earlier to assess the weather and travel conditions.
“We thank everyone involved in helping us to get this game on today. If you’re travelling to Anfield then please take extra care. We look forward to seeing you there.”
