The Premier League game between Liverpool and Manchester United is under threat due to heavy snowfall across the UK.
Amber weather warnings were in place for much of England overnight Saturday and into Sunday as authorities warned against the potential for significant disruption to travel across the country.
Manchester and Liverpool John Lennon airports saw runways closed in the early hours of Sunday because of snow and ice. Drivers were also warned of potentially severe weather conditions on certain roads, including in Greater Manchester.
Liverpool and United’s match at Anfield was due to kick off at 4:30 p.m. local time (11:30 a.m. ET) on Sunday. The Sporting News has the latest on whether or not the game is taking place.

According to the Liverpool Echo, the Safety Advisory Group of the city’s council was due to meet early on Sunday to discuss whether or not it would be safe for the game to go ahead. Such a decision would be taken on the grounds of supporter welfare, i.e. whether or not it is safe for those attending the match to travel to the fixture. The same body took the decision to postpone Liverpool’s game with Everton in December due to high winds in the region.
Ian Dennis of the BBC said the meeting was due to be held at 9 a.m. local time but that it was deferred until 11:45 a.m., just under five hours before kickoff.
The closure of runways in the major airports in Liverpool and Manchester has already caused huge disruption to air travel in the UK on Sunday, while multiple train lines are operating disrupted services, including those that connect the Liverpool region to the wider country. Merseyrail reported that one of its lines was facing service cancellations because a tree branch had fallen onto the railway.
Should it be considered safe enough for the game to go ahead, there would likely also be a separate pitch inspection by match officials, although it is very rare to see top-flight matches called off because the playing surface is deemed unusable.
There have already been matches cancelled in different parts of the country due to the snow.
The EFL League Two match between Chesterfield and Gillingham was postponed because of the heavy snow in the Derbyshire region. Three other games in that division — Crewe Alexandra vs. Bromley, Fleetwood Town vs. AFC Wimbledon, and Newport County vs. Morecambe — are at risk.
The day’s other Premier League fixture sees Fulham host Ipswich Town, while Sunderland play Plymouth Argyle in the EFL Championship.
