Indonesia is set to enhance its tourism sector with a new electronic Visa on Arrival (e-VoA) system.

Indonesia is taking a significant step in bolstering its tourism industry with the introduction of an electronic Visa on Arrival (e-VoA) system. The digital service, which will launch next month, aims to streamline the entry process for international tourists, offering a more efficient and user-friendly experience.

This initiative comes at a time when Indonesia is witnessing a substantial recovery in its tourism sector, particularly highlighted by the 335,000 visitors from the UK last year. The UK continues to be the largest European source market for Bali, contributing to the 1.74 million UK visitors recorded over the past decade. The Indonesian government is keen to leverage this recovery by targeting an ambitious goal of 14 million global travellers this year, having nearly reached 10 million in just the first eight months of 2024.

The new e-VoA service will allow travellers from 96 nationalities, including the UK, to process their visa applications online before their journey. This pre-approved digital visa will facilitate a smoother entry into the country. Travellers can complete their applications via the website of visa specialist VFS Global, where they will submit the necessary documents and pay fees online, currently set at almost £25. Once completed, visas will be emailed to applicants before their departure.

Silmy Karim, the Director General of Immigration, noted, “The Directorate General of Immigration offers the latest digital solutions that enhance the experience for foreign nationals who wish to visit Indonesia.” This service aligns with the country’s efforts to improve tourism infrastructure and services, which are considered crucial for accommodating increased tourist numbers.

VFS Global will be instrumental in this initiative, providing dedicated support in multiple languages, including English, Mandarin, Japanese, Korean, Arabic, German, and French. Zubin Karkaria, founder and chief executive of VFS Global, expressed enthusiasm for the project, stating that the e-VoA will significantly improve the visa application experience, making it quicker and more convenient. This, in turn, is expected to boost Indonesia’s appeal as a travel destination.

Additionally, the platform will include group booking options that are expected to be beneficial for travel trades and conventions, further supporting the tourism industry’s growth.
