Bruges, the picturesque Belgian capital, has been crowned the best European city break by train for British travellers, according to a recent survey by Which?. 

It asked more than 1,000 members to rate their European city experiences, with scores of people placing Bruges ahead of popular destinations like Paris and Amsterdam.

The rankings were based on seven key factors, including food and drink, cultural attractions, accommodation, and value for money. 

Bruges emerged with an impressive overall score of 85%, praised for its charming canals, cobbled medieval streets, and enchanting atmosphere.

Just a three-and-a-half-hour journey from London St Pancras, Bruges offers a quick and easy getaway. 

Which? voters ranked the city highly for its compact size, making it easily walkable for visitors, and noted its four-star ratings for food, drink, cultural sites, and affordability.

Respondents described the city as “magical” and “enchanting,” with its medieval architecture, scenic canals, and charming atmosphere setting it apart from other European hotspots.

Bruges was particularly lauded for its culinary scene. 

Known for its Belgian waffles, beer, and, of course, chocolate, the city scored four stars in the food and drink category. 

Visitors raved about the cosy cafes and the abundance of chocolate shops, offering everything from freshly made truffles to artisanal Belgian chocolate bars. 

Bruges also has a strong reputation for high-quality yet affordable dining, with many travellers highlighting its traditional Belgian cuisine alongside international options.

It scored highly for its cultural sights and attractions, with landmarks like the Belfry of Bruges, the Basilica of the Holy Blood, and the Groeningemuseum proving popular with tourists. 

The city’s well-preserved medieval architecture and romantic canals have earned it a UNESCO World Heritage designation, and the historic centre is a major draw for those interested in exploring the rich history of northern Europe.

Whether visiting for its culinary delights, historical sites, or simply to enjoy a leisurely walk along the canals, it’s no surprise that Bruges has once again captured the hearts of British travellers, earning its title as the best European city break by train.
