A frequent flyer and travel expert has revealed her trick to saving hundreds on long-haul flights by taking an additional holiday in the middle – and the location she recommends is worth a stopover.
TikTok user ‘nicoletravelandlife’ shared the tip in a recent video, mentioning Bulgaria as one of the best countries to consider as a layover on long-haul journeys.
Mario Van Poppel, founder of currency exchange platform Manor FX, said: “By routing through Bulgaria’s capital, Sofia, travellers can secure cheaper long-haul flights to destinations like Asia, the Middle East and even parts of Africa.
“It’s a true hidden gem when it comes to travel savings as its Southeast Europe location is closer to other continents. And it’s a more affordable layover than other European hubs.
“Not only are flights cheaper, but Bulgaria itself is a budget-friendly location, making it well worth a trip.”
In her video, Nicole said that flying via Bulgaria can save you up to £150 on a long-haul flight.
The capital of Sofia has plenty to offer tourists. Van Poppel said: “From Alexander Nevsky’s Cathedral, one of the largest Eastern Orthodox cathedrals in the world, to Vitosha Mountain, a short drive out of the city, there’s lots to see and do in Sofia.
“Visitors will also be treated to hearty local cuisine, such as the cheese-filled pastry called banista and kavarma, a slow-cooked meat stew, at a fraction of the cost to other cities in Western Europe.”
Accommodation is also reasonable in Bulgaria, with mid-range hotels averaging around £40-£60 per night. And beer usually costs £1.70-£2.20.
Nicole shared her other tips for cheaper travel, saying that if you’re looking for a quick city break then January is the best time to book. She shared you can often find deals with flights and accommodation for under £100.
