Ice Hockey World Championship: Canada beat Great Britain 4-2
Great Britain suffered a 4-2 defeat by Canada in their opening game of the Ice Hockey World Championship in the Czech Republic.
Liam Kirk gave Britain a surprise lead in Prague but the world’s number-one side levelled before the first intermission.
Canada then took control to lead 4-1, with last year’s number one NHL draft pick Connor Bedard scoring twice, before Ben O’Connor got one back for Britain in the third period.
The Olympic and world champions saw out victory to go second in Group A, behind Switzerland.
“Canada are a great team and stacked with talent,” GB head coach Pete Russell said.
“Without the puck, we were really good. I thought we showed a high compete level and we had a great structure.
“That will give the guys some great belief for the rest of the tournament.”
Britain’s next match is on Sunday against second seeds Finland.
