Dominik Szoboszlai will become the youngest captain in European Championship history if he leads Hungary out for their opening Group A match against Switzerland on Saturday.
The Liverpool midfielder, 23, helped Hungary qualify for Euro 2020 but missed the tournament, which was postponed until 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic, because of injury.
Szoboszlai is now relishing the opportunity of leading his country in a group that also contains hosts Germany and Scotland.
“I don’t want to burden the team, and I don’t want the outside world to burden us. But if we feel pressure, we can help each other enjoy the Euros,” said Szoboszlai, who is hoping to play after nursing a thigh issue.
“It’s not a small thing to be at this tournament. However, we do have a very good team. It’s like a big family, and together we can do anything.”
Hungary, who are managed by Italian Marco Rossi, are appearing at their third successive Euros.
They are ranked 26th in Fifa’s world rankings – seven places below Switzerland.
The Swiss reached the quarter-finals at the last edition and boss Murat Yakin is hoping to go further this time.
“We expect Hungary to play robustly and as a well-organised team,” he said.
“We have to play our game that we have worked on. We’ll be challenged in this game, we need to get the most out of it.”
