Iconic names of UK sport have won this most prestigious individual award in the past, with England Lionesses goalkeeper Mary Earps taking the title last year.
A shortlist of six contenders was announced last week, and the winner will be decided by a public vote during the televised BBC Sports Personality of the Year ceremony on Tuesday night, which is live on air from 7pm.
The nominees are Warrington darts player Luke ‘The Nuke’ Littler, Leigh athlete Keely Hodgkinson, footballer Jude Bellingham, cricketer Joe Root, para-cyclist Sarah Storey and triathlete Alex Yee.
The programme, which will be presented by Gabby Logan, Alex Scott and Clare Balding and broadcast live from MediaCity in Salford, will celebrate 12 months of sporting action and achievement.
Other award winners that will be revealed on the night are Young Sports Personality of the Year – in which Littler is also nominated – Team and Coach of the Year, Unsung Hero and the Helen Rollason Award.
The Lifetime Achievement and World Sport Star awards will also be presented.
During the Sports Personality of the Year show, you can only vote once and a number of options will be available to do so.
