There are plenty in with a chance, including the unexposed BE AWARE. An impressive winner on his debut at Newbury, Dan Skelton’s gelding has been narrowly denied twice since. He reportedly lost a shoe behind Kamsinas last time out but could gain compensation here, albeit this is a warm race.
Selection: Be Aware @ 8/1 with Betfred
This is a drop in class in all but name for RAADOBARG, who was beaten only a length in the Lincoln at Doncaster on his seasonal reappearance. He followed that up with seventh in Newbury’s Spring Cup, in which he was denied a clear run at a crucial stage. Although he has been on a bit of a losing run, he has been highly tried over the last 18 months and should go well here despite a wide draw.
Selection: Raadobarg @ 9/2 with Betfred
A few of these are making up the numbers and it looks like a good opportunity for EASY GAME to add another Grade 2 success to his CV. He has to give weight away but he has better recent form than most of his rivals if you take out his run at Aintree last time. He can give Willie Mullins a boost on the final day of the Trainers’ Championship battle.
Selection: Easy Game @ 9/2 with Betfred
GWEEDORE won on his seasonal reappearance last year and he was in cracking form at the back end of the season. He has yet to win off a mark this high but he has run some big races in defeat and the key here could be an uncontested lead, given that he’s a game front-runner who likes to dominate his rivals. Heavy ground is another factor in his favour and he should arguably be favourite in this field.
Selection: Gweedore @ 5/1 with Betfred
Jonbon and El Fabiolo both come with caveats attached and it may be worth taking a chance on EDWARDSTONE to spring a surprise. Jonbon bounced back to form at Aintree last time but he’s capable of putting in below-par runs after big efforts, while El Fabiolo’s jumping may not stand up to this particular test. Given that Edwardstone’s career-best performance came when bolting up in the Tingle Creek at Sandown a couple of years ago, he may be the one worth chancing at decent odds.
Selection: Edwardstone @ 8/1 with Betfred
The last big handicap of the jumps season and KITTY’S LIGHT has to be a big player after his heroic fifth in the Grand National this month. The quick turnaround is a slight concern but connections have been targeting a spring campaign and he looks well treated from 1lb lower than his National mark, a race that was a much tougher assignment than this. A repeat victory would be no surprise.
Selection: Kitty’s Light @ 9/2 with Betfred
