Robert Walford’s Shutupshirley is the most likely winner and one who could be overpriced is The Four Sixes. He was going well enough for Olly Murphy before unseating his rider at Wetherby over Christmas. He’s a solid each-way shout.
Leau Du Sud is short in the market and I can’t go against him for the Skelton’s.
Bravemansgame wears a tongue tie for the first time but he’s regressed for every run since his second behind Galopin Des Champs in the Gold Cup at Cheltenham last year. He’s slowly going downhill and he should be far lower than his rating of 157. I’m with Venetia Williams’ Djelo who got outpaced by Protektorat at Windsor last month. That was a solid enough run and he can take the Denman Chase.
Willie Mullins has sent Gala Marceau over and she looks good and fit. The conditions should suit her too. You Wear It Well has to give Gala Marceau 4lbs and I fancy her to get the better of West Balboa. She should win this.
I’m hoping that Matata and Edwardstone will go at each other which will set it up perfectly for Evan Williams’ Libberty Hunter. His last performance was arguably the best of his life and he should win this. I’ve also stuck him up each-way for the Champion Chase at Cheltenham.
I went all the way through these and found one at the bottom. I’m making a case for Whistleinthedark at an each-way price. 12 months ago he was rated 141 and he’s now well down the weights and rated 122. Harry Reed rides and he’s decent over this 2m 4f trip.
Secret Squirrel was good at Windsor but I’m not sold on the form. The track really suited him and it was fast whereas Newbury isn’t that quick. Beat The Bat ran really well at Haydock a couple of runs ago when finishing second. It didn’t go to plan for him at Windsor last time behind Secret Squirrel.
I’m also giving Iberico Lord, who won this race last year, a good chance. Freddie Gordon is on board and claiming 3lbs for Nicky Henderson and he can go well after shaping better than the result suggested at Windsor last month.
