Lawrenny has leading form claims and seems consistent but the less exposed SMOKERINGINTHEDARK (NAP) looked threatening last time at Musselburgh until his stamina seemingly failed him over 3m. Cruden is respected with his 4yo allowance.

Looking Splendid is as solid as any of these and On The Go could be an improver now tackling his first handicap. Another who might feature is LADYS PRESENT, who hasn’t been getting home over longer trips since her close fourth at Catterick in December.

CAVE HILL won over hurdles here in December (2m4f, good) when 7lb lower and beaten about 10l in his subsequent defeats on softer ground; these conditions will suit him on his chase debut.

Travis Wheatley and Old But Gold could be interesting on their handicap debuts, and especially if there’s money around. However, RUSSIAN VIRTUE, Bathgate, and The Grafter are all running well and look sure to give their all once more. Back on drier ground, Russian Virtue edges preference.

Harjo ran his best race for a long time when making nearly all at Doncaster in January, but with nearly half the fences omitted, the form may not be that reliable. Down the bottom of the weights, THE PADDY PIE found plenty for the return to a staying trip when winning at Catterick which opens some new doors for him. Monochromix and Similar Story are others to consider.

Lambourn-based Jamie Snowden’s only runner on the card is TIPTOPTIM who looks to have serious claims on the strength of his Plumpton effort. Geordie Mackem is comfortably next best on form but Big Wigg and Luckie Devil are newcomers who need checking in the market.
