French air traffic controllers are set to strike on Thursday April 25 in one of their largest ever industrial actions.
The strikes are expected to see 75 percent of flights to and from Paris Orly Airport cancelled while two thirds of flights at Paris Charles de Gaulle are likely to be cut.
Marseille-Provence Airport could also lose two thirds of flights while Nice and Toulouse are expected to see 60 percent of flights affected.
Flights crossing French airspace could also be impacted by the action in a move that’s likely to cause chaos across Europe.
The strike is expected to last for 24 hours and British tourists travelling to and from France should check their flight details.
A spokesperson for the SNCTA union, which represents over 60 percent of air traffic controllers, told AFP: “People should expect major disruption and long delays.”
France’s national papers have said the strikes will be a ‘journee noir’ or ‘black day’ for French airports.
Workers are striking over a planned restructuring of air navigation services and demanding a pay rise and more employees.
The strikes are going ahead despite an agreed ‘Olympic truce’ to pause industrial action until after the Games.
British tourists travelling to and from France on Thursday, April 25 should check the status of their flight before heading to the airport.
British travellers heading to other European destinations could also see their flights impacted if they’re due to fly over French airspace.
