Defending French Open champion Iga Swiatek saved match point on her way to denying an inspired Naomi Osaka her biggest victory since returning to the sport as the World No 1 survived a three-set epic to reach the third round at Roland Garros.
Osaka, the four-time grand slam champion, gave birth to daughter Shai last July and only returned to tennis in January, but stood on the verge of a shock victory against the ‘Queen of Clay’ on Court Philippe-Chatrier when she led in the deciding set.
But Swiatek, the overwhelming favourite to win a third French Open title in a row, dug deep to break Osaka twice in a tense finale as the Pole kept her winning streak at Roland Garros alive with a 7-6 1-6 7-5 victory in almost three hours.
Osaka, whose best result at the French Open is the third round, produced a remarkable level so soon into her comeback from her 15-month break from the tour and announced herself as a contender for the biggest titles ahead of the hard-court swing.

French Open: Swiatek survives match point to come through fierce battle with Osaka
Iga Swiatek came through a titanic second-round clash with fellow four-time grand slam champion Naomi Osaka to reach the French Open third round.
Osaka looked set to pull off her biggest win in years when she led the world number one and defending champion 5-2 in the third set.
But the 26-year-old from Japan will have nightmares about a missed forehand as Swiatek survived a match point to come from brink of defeat and win 7-6 (1) 1-6 7-5.
It was a remarkable effort from Osaka, the former world number one who only returned to action after maternity leave in January.

This very much went under the radar as it was on during the Swiatek vs Osaka thriller, but Coco Gauff is safely through to the third round in Paris.

The Queen of Clay fights on. That was a match worthy of the final, not the second round. Huge credit to both.

French Open: Let’s hear from Iga Swiatek
“For most of the match I didn’t feel here, I was not focused, but when I was under pressure I was actually able to focus more. I didn’t think about losing and I hope my game is going to get better because of that.”
Quite a remarkable interview that from Swiatek, calling out the fans after such a win!
Huge praise for Osaka, too.

French Open: Let’s hear from Iga Swiatek
“This match was intense, much more intense for the second round than I expected. Naomi played amazing tennis with a loose hand and sometimes risking a lot. She was finding it in and playing great tennis, maybe she will be a clay-court specialist!
“I’m sorry to bring this up because we are playing for you guys, but when we are playing and you scream it is really hard to focus. I usually don’t bring this up because I want to be in the zone, but guys this is serious. It’s hard to accept this. We are playing for big things, big money, guys please if you could support us after the points and not during.
“I hope you guys are still going to like me, because I know the French crowd like to boo!”
That was unprompted by Swiatek. Wow.

French Open: GAME, SET AND MATCH
Iga Swiatek 7-6 1-6 7-5 Naomi Osaka
Swiatek and Osaka hug at the net, before Osaka quickly leaves the court.
But what a performance from the four-time grand slam champion. SHE IS BACK.
And she could have ended Swiatek’s reign. She had match point ,and the chance to go 5-1 up in the third.
But Swiatek battles on! That was a champion’s comeback.

It’s so tense – Swiatek and Osaka trade errors in the opening points. Osaka drags two forehands in a row wide!
STUNNING backhand winenr from Swiatek! What an angle! Right on the line!
Now Swiatek has TWO MATCH POINTS!
Osaka goes wide on the backhand and Swiatek, somehow, survives!

French Open: Iga Swiatek 7-6 1-6 6-5 Naomi Osaka – BREAK!
I can’t believe how good this is. Swiatek senses a chance and steers a backhand winner to get to 15-30. Osaka responds with an ace. 30-30.
Osaka nets on the forehand – she’s not swinging as freely nwo and it’s BREAK POINT Swiatek.
But Osaka finds the corner with the forehand – I take it now ! – DEUCE.
Another big serve from Osaka gets her to game point but then Swiatek clobbers the next return. Deuce again.
Backhand winner Osaka, beautiful. Drive volley Swiatek! Level again.
A net cord from Swiatek means it sits up for Osaka… but she pushes the backhand long!
BREAK POINT: and Osaka double faults!!!!!! I can’t believe it! Swiatek breaks at last and has come from 4-1 and 5-3 down, match point down, to stand on the brink of the third round!
