Aryna Sabalenka and Elena Rybakina suffered shock defeats in the French Open quarter-finals on Wednesday.
Second seed Sabalenka seemed to be struggling with stomach cramps as she was beaten by Russian 17-year-old Mirra Andreeva, while Rybakina lost to Italy’s Jasmine Paolini.
It means the winner of the other semi-final, bewteen top and third seeds Iga Swiatek and Coco Gauff, will be the strong favourite for the title.
Following the withdrawal of Novak Djokovic with a knee injury, the sole men’s quarter-final on Wednesday was between Alexander Zverev and Alex de Minaur, with fourth seed Zverev winning 6-4, 7-6, 6-4 to set up a last-four showdown with Casper Ruud.
