An urgent travel warning has been issued to British tourists amid heightened tensions across Seoul in South Korea.
The Asian tourism hotspot has been experiencing political unrest as a large number of demonstrators are on the roads following President Yoon’s impeachment and subsequent arrest.
The protests have become increasingly heated, with both supporters and opponents of Yoon staging rival demonstrations.
Major protest sites in Seoul have included the Gwanghwamun area, where sizable crowds have gathered to express their dissent.
Another focal point for demonstrators has been the Constitutional Court in the Anguk district. Additionally, protests have also been reported near the Seoul Western District Court in Gongdeok and around the National Assembly building in Yeouido.
These events have spread throughout different parts of the city at various times, leading to multiple hotspots for protest activity.
Given the scale of the protests, security officials have cautioned the public to stay vigilant and avoid participating in large gatherings across the capital
The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office stated: “We are aware of heightened political tensions in South Korea.
“Large demonstrations are likely to continue following President Yoon’s impeachment and arrest.”
Authorities also emphasised the importance of following local guidance as the protests continue to unfold across multiple locations in Seoul.
Foreigners entering the country are also encouraged to research their destination and get appropriate travel insurance.
The FCDO continued: “Insurance should cover your itinerary, planned activities and expenses in an emergency.”
Brits have been urged to take care of their belonging in crowded areas and areas visited by foreigners.
