Brits who are planning to take a swim on holiday in the Maldives have been issued with a new warning.
The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), which gives advice to British travellers, provided some new information to ensure safety.
It said: “The sea around Maldives can have strong tidal currents that can drag you away from the shoreline. Over eight British tourists have drowned since 2021. It is important that you know the risks and what you can do to minimise them.”
Those travelling to the Maldives should read any security information that tour operators provide, as advised by the Foreign Office. Holidaymakers are also urged to check the local swimming conditions when arriving at their acommodation.
The FCDO added: “Only swim in well supervised areas, areas designated as safe for tourists, or where lifeguards are available.
“Pay attention to warning signs or flags and avoid swimming in areas with strong currents, high waves or dangerous underwater conditions. If something does not feel right, get out of the water at the earliest opportunity.
“Being aware of the potential dangers will help you to stay safe. Always take local advice before going into the sea.”
On the webpage, Brits can also find direction to water safety on holiday information from the Royal Life Saving Society.
The Maldives is a very popular holiday destination because of the huge choice of islands to discover, boasting a huge 1,192.
The archipelagic state is also surrounded by crystal blue waters, making it the ideal spot for tourists to enjoy swimming and water activities.
However, it is always important to check the FCDO’s most recent information regarding any country before travelling to ensure a safe holiday.
