Manchester United defender Harry Maguire says it was “tough” to miss out on selection for Euro 2024 after an ultimately fruitless battle to get fit for the tournament.
After picking up a calf injury in April, Maguire knew he would miss the FA Cup win over Manchester City but thought he would be fit in time to travel to Germany.
Unfortunately for the defender, he suffered a setback while with the Three Lions and missed out on a place in the squad.
“The injury was always going to be tight for the cup final,” said Maguire. “But I still believed I would be available for the cup final. I had a setback in cup final week. Then I thought ‘I am going to miss the cup final but I will be fine for the Euros’.
“But then I went away with England and had another setback when I was with England.
“It has been really frustrating to go from where I was, to all season working to get myself into a position mentally and physically at the top of my game and be in a position to feel I could really make a difference for Manchester United and my country. To miss out was tough.”
